To Each His Own...

PFinding an empty page in a near filled
Moleskine journal I decided to
quickly compare colored pencil techniques
I have tried. On the left is the dry regular
ones not applied heavily (I am looking at the
book mentioned in the sketch----and on the right
is the watercolor pencils application I usually
do ---the final result is : I like to use the
watercolor pencils with the waterbrush better, as it fits my
temperament and is more fun for me. To enjoy
it is very important ....but to each his own.

You are right. The wet does look less messy. Both apples look good enough to eat. Great Job!

Lovely apples!

I prefer the watercolor pencil version, too. It looks happy and bright and effortless. Nice job, and it's fun to have comparisons.

I agree, it takes so long to do a colored pencil image and it tends to be "grainy". I far prefer the watercolor pencils with a wet brush to blend. I do enjoy seeing the 2 apples side by side, they both look great!

It's a really good comparison. I prefer to use watercolour pencils wet too. I struggle with shade and tone with the pencils. I like to blend.

Your apples both look crisp and juicy but if I had to have one it would the one on the right! ;-)

Ahhh, yes, well you use watercolor pencils so well. I on the other hand have an easier time controlling dry colored pencils - I just make a mess with water media, even though I still have fun. These are both lovely but the watercolor pencil version is more 'you' :)

I've never tried the wet pencils before... I think I would also like them a lot more than regular! Gorgeous sketch!

Hmm, an answer to a question that's been in my mind since I joined this group... Love those apples, and yes, the watercolored pencils look lovely..

What a cool idea to devote a page to compare the tools side by side. I think your results are wonderful with both, and it is very interesting to see them side by side.

Both apples are terrific! I've never used w/c pencils wet..did you have to dip often? I wonder. Excellent study.

I took a class with Love This Journal's Jessica Wesolek from Cre8it.com----that's how I learned different ways to use them---she does a new video each day for her classes. Winna

Wonderful apples, I too like the 'wet' one best!

A lovely experiment - both are gorgeous. I am NOT an expert with w/c pencils - don't really know how to get the best out of them at all - might have to do an on-line class!!

I agree with you, I love the flowing movement of the watercolor pencils, the smoothness of it, the feeling that it is a painting rather than a drawing.

I also like the watercolor pencil version. Thanks for sharing your experiment, it helps us all learn about the different mediums.

Gosh, it's astonishing how much difference the water one makes in terms of smoothness isn't it? That right hand one is great - so shiny!

I've never got on very well with watercolour pencils, but I've often wondered if that's more to do with the colour selection that you get in a tin. There's a horrible bluey dark green that just goes turquoise the moment I add water, and the pale green goes absolutely luminous. I probably need to track down some singles.

I actually wanted to comment on the post that followed this one (in my rss feed reader) but seems to have been removed. I'll just say I appreciated both the drawing and your recollection.
