Meeting a Poet/Painter

(click photo to see larger)
In her career as a nurse and her duties with
The Sisters Of Providence she must have helped
a multitude of people....
I think it is intimidating to post
a portrait of a person who might not
like being depicted speaking...
but such a speaker only is
a blessing to meet...

"The Talk"

I think this is the last chance to

upload for a Kate's final 6th

class photo--I may be wrong--

For the class I added the words...

but for a painting

I would leave them out and

concentrate on the Post Office

building's details more

It appears

in my mind at odd moments

and there's no reason I

know of for that

---but there must be.

By The Sea Studio

EDM # 184

Draw Something You've Always Wanted

(click photo to see text better)

********************

It's great to see somebody

make their dream come true.

I personally want the studio by the

sea but more barn sized

with a few comfort conveniences

I loved seeing this place

each day.

The Cat That Sat

EDM # 30
Draw A Chair
May 2009
******
Here we are in the
Slayter Memorial Museum's
dimly lit entry way,
encircled by
ancient Egyptian artifacts.
A stream of light falls on the
tiles and across a modernistic
folding chair...where
the cat chooses to sit.....
(see the heart?)

"If At First"

On my front porch the Robins
came again this year to try a
nest in the bull head bell ---it
seems the Mrs. doesn't like
me to come out the door but
otherwise she's content to
sit on her three blue eggs.

Breakfast and Barnboards

EDM #18 Draw a view through the
window of just about anything
(left click on photo to see enlarged)

***************

Going out to breakfast with

Gail has been a highlight in my

life as we both bring show and tell

bags and catch up on our lives..

I also eat more than I ever do

at home and marvel that I

manage not to leave a crumb

on the plate. The time too

soon, comes for us to get in

our cars out in the parking lot by the

railroad tracks and as I head out

I see this great old barn and then

have to turn

right to go home. It always

reminds me of bygone days when

barns were the best things to work in,

to play in and to store things away. I'd

love to have one out in my yard right now.

EDM CHALLENGE DRAW A WINDOW

I'll leave it to you to put your own
interpretation on this spread--I had
several ideas and so this developed
.....right click to read better--the pages
are in a small Moleskine
where I had cut two consecutive
pages out---and then glued the
cut edges left,
in the center---I needed some
Moleskine paper and still
have some left in the journal's
back pocket for future use. I'm using
pencil, ink, watercolor pencils
and waterbrushes.

Moody Mugs

click on photo to read pillow talk
****************
I love the collection of coffee cups over the stove and
usually pick out the one that I'm in the mood for,
to drink my coffee in. The framed motto has been there
for eons it seems and always makes me smile to
spray on the glass cleaner and polish it,
about once a month. The tea cup puppy did
come to visit me and did sit in my cup....I recall
being afraid of one that would
ticky ticky run to the edge of her porch and
bark at me till I was well past her territory
--- when I was about 7.

Homage to Jan Brett et al.

Left click on photo to
read words better
******
This spread started with the #191 Challenge

of drawing paper money---then

I decided the spread should go up

to the top page too--I purposefully

did a Jan Brett "how to" video Dutch

Bunny to get something up

there. Then did the

Polish Chicks from pausing live ones

moving around in her video...

the dark background with the chicks

told me to add two other dark areas

to balance this---the Chinese symbol

is for Properity .....the black bird becomes a

"money is the root of all evil" symbol---

the running ribbon was added to

enhance page flow...the pencil, sketcher's

homemade bombsite and the tack

and hanging tags were fill in

design additions......the writing up

top, was planned to be there ....

that's how it all came to be.

Bus Stop Welcome

Quite a few times I have been on this road
in town and had to stop behind a school bus.....
it seems odd to me that this would happen in this
same spot, but it has a few times. The big ole dog
always waits for her to get off the bus, in an
anticipating, tail waging stance .
She has a bag in her hand which demands
a good sniffing--it might be a treat!

"Dedication"

Left click to see larger
*************
Here is the dedication page in the front of
my second, almost completed,
can hardly believe it, small
Moleskine journal.
I have managed to catch quite a few
strong memories of my mother,
before she was my mother.
You can see the drawing from the photo in the
blog just before this one.
I'll just mention what an ordeal it
was to pick the blackberries even if
there was quite a large tangled patch---
I had to wear long sleeved
flannel shirt and big buckle boots to survive
something resembling no mans land...
which was a killer in the hot
days the berries were ripe to pick.

"Castle Pig with Country Pig"

Left click on photo
to see larger
**********************
A photo by my brother in California
and two by me in Ireland
at the time, inspired this spread.
The Irish pig had such a neat thatched
roof hut , stone walls and a castle
pen keeper on hand---while
the California pig was very
happy on an Animal Farm
Sanctuary

The Cat with the Onion.

LEFT CLICK
on photo to read the small print.
It's been a pleasure knowing this cat and
a never ending source of joy.
He's just a year old and loves people.
The light in this sketch is coming
from a rear window with the blue
sky reflecting a bit on the wide sill.
End of story ......

To Each His Own...

PFinding an empty page in a near filled
Moleskine journal I decided to
quickly compare colored pencil techniques
I have tried. On the left is the dry regular
ones not applied heavily (I am looking at the
book mentioned in the sketch----and on the right
is the watercolor pencils application I usually
do ---the final result is : I like to use the
watercolor pencils with the waterbrush better, as it fits my
temperament and is more fun for me. To enjoy
it is very important ....but to each his own.

This Rocks!

EDM No 119
Draw A Rock
******************
On a nearby road, a stone wall emerges from
being covered with snow when the winds
blow..around here you can hardly
spit without hitting one of these walls.... so
unique and handmade. I noticed in this one,
they are all the same kind of stone--perhaps
granite---some walls have varied rocks.
I think when they are made from the stones
on the property they tend to be more the
same type---and when a contractor
builds them he uses all kinds for added interest.
At any rate, I love them all.

"Three Sleepy Kittens" EDM 185

Every Day Matters
Challenge 185
Draw A Cat
*********************
The three kittens are sleeping on top of one of those cat condos
and my brother took the photo. I liked the varied
positions and imagine it's obvious where a
patch was made on this one--in fact, two...one to make
the design better and the other to hide details that
were confusing even if they were right. This
spread sent me out to another room to go through
my stuffed mittens draw, which seemed to have 99% gloves..
so I had to imagine the mittens.

"Three Afloat"

A while back I would have worked this
into a bigger acrylic painting---but have
not the energy,
so I am thrilled to be able
to complete a journal spread, instead.
The woman is modeling for me even
if she doesn't know it, as I take
a photo from the car. As I have
no other photos of her I can only
get a vague likeness. I know she is the
Captain's wife and sells tickets
for Whale Watch Cruises. Also she
was very kind helping me with
phone use---She was the kind of
person you can laugh with---I like that.
There's a dream like quality with the
windjammer, star shell and mysterious
red ball hovering in this space.
