My Art Supplies My Soul

I started this for the theme "Supples"...
then got a really bad cold which I am still fighting off...
but 'some' energy has come back...haven't had
one for years..well, this art supply project, got
me back to finish it...and added colors...really needed
it in the palette especially....I first did a similar
Winna Design about 25 years ago on a red sweat shirt...
it still looks like new...as I did not wear it much...
I'll include a photo of it later today...I may have
taught others to do it...don't recall...so many students,0h,
so long ago....on the shirt the design goes
all the way around the front and back....

"All That Remains"
In October 2018, the Virtual Painter group is
in Heshima, Japan...on The Ghost Island.
*****
I got very interested in this place and watched videos,
read what I could .   In the 1890's it was
an undersea coal mine island...and that
was what existed there...the mining and the
workers...a village sprung up....then, the population grew to
5,259 living in high concrete  bldgs..,,,crowded etc. In 1974
Minolta, who owned the mines , closed it all
down and gave the people 3 months to get off the island.
Thus it was abandoned and also felt
some Atomic Bomb effects....Now, tourists visit to
feel its eeriness...

Bird Lunch Counter

I put the old straw hat on my picnic table and weighted it with something heavy..
This way, I was able to get tons (well, maybe not tons) bird photos as they
land to eat the seeds and also could get good shadows and light there. I believe this is a red wing blackbird. Right now, at my kitchen porch window I am getting a great red cardinal who often comes, to lunch with his wife....and a squirrel that is such a  sly one...and practically fearless...he keeps returning no matter what I threaten him with out the kitchen door..he KNOWS I don't mean half of what I holler..sooooooo...seeing as he is a rodent...I thought of spraying  the wooden feeder edge with Mouse Oust....very pepperminty smelling....of course he brazenly came again... I saw him immediately sniffing where I sprayed and halleluiah... he jumped of and ran away.....fingers crossed he stays away !

On Ghost Island...

this was done for the Virtural Paintout...where we travel
with Google guy to places all over the world...this month is is Hashima, Japan
also known as Gunkanjima and The Ghost Island...It first was used for it's undersea coal mine...in the 1890's....villiage grew on top and concrete was used around 1959...it was closed down in 1974 and the mine owner, Minolta demolished it ...giving people 3 months.. to leave....thus the ghostly feel to it if you can go there...only certain people can go inside and photo etc....in this scene there is a temple way up high that had steep steps going down..the boss lived up there. In the front on the right is
the school which still has desks and chalkboards..The red building I do not know anything
about it, except it is the reason I chose to stop and do my  ink/watercolor there...from captured photo.

You Gotta Know

the theme for Inktober in 2018 on this day the 17th is Country music.  I  know any friendly poker game I've ever been in usually has this sung by all at some time...I don't manage to do this fun Inktober  theme
work in October..but just occasionally...I tie myself up with things I love to do and stretch  myself thin sometimes...but not always..

Midsomer Murders

I stared watching reruns of Midsomers Murders
on Netflix...and the location they were
investigating was  such a HUGE mansion....
I felt I HAD to sketch it---well just a corner
of the back  I think...it has so many
chimneys etc. I can't imagine how long it
would take to see each room...for me maybe all day...

learning is a good thing I think. Click to see better

Doctor's Island Rememberance

"Doctors Island Approach"

Used my artist's license here
and show you the first stage of
an acrylic work for me, now.
You also see the new acrylic palette
I love .  I was attracted to this place the second
I saw it and even more  fascinated to know it
once was called Doctor's Island, located
off the Maine and New Hampshire coasts.
Now known as Pierce Island...this really
made me wonder if my Dr. Pierce that delivered me
back in 1935, was a member of this family.
And here I was by chance, being so drawn to
the place.  He was a very kind and learned
man.
The Lobster painted on the roof I think
I have seen before, but only in a dream.

Palette Assemblage Two Views

I love to make assemblages and especially in palettes...
That vintage glove I love !  The theme here is all about
a walk by a hidden brook on the property... combined with
little tresures

Around the Place

Every once in a while I decide to photo
some of the things around here that
I'd like to save on Winnas World...
each assemblage has a story for me
to remember and I love to do this type of
expressive puttering around. This was this morning
and I liked the way the light was hitting thing
s as the sun had not been out in awhile
......too busy snowing etc. CLICK

do for a The Virtural Paintout for April 2016

then Acrylic , then colored pencils...known as "mixed media"

Vanished Friends

Hi everybody and a Happy New Year to all!
This shows the progression of a page I
did for The Virtual Paintout for January 2015 where
the theme for the entire month is Philadelphia.
We can upload up to 3 on the site each month
and this month I may only do one as I have
some other exciting classes to  attend.
Below is the initial pencil sketch done from a
Google Street view I found...that I liked
so many of the details and the two boys
on the steps....I darken the work to
upload so you can see it much better...but it
was quite light.
the next photo show the inking done and that is
also darkened...and not as easy to see as the
scan is. I included the pen which I like
for some work but it turned out it was too thin
for this one and I went over the lines in the end with my
favorite Uniball Vision waterproof fine pen.,,,it
gave me the punch I wanted.  Also I took
this whole work very slowly and you see some of the
notes I made of observations I wanted to
keep in mind. I don't usually do this and thought
 it helped me a lot.

Here is the final work done in tube watercolors
using waterbrushes for most of it..This street
was tree lined and some people had plants
under the windows etc.  This place
may have seeds started in the little
plot by the steps.  The reflections were from
similar houses across the street and trees.
Since this is a small work, about
8 by 5 inches, I left out the coffee cup and
can of soda between the boys...
As I worked on this the song
The Streets of Philadelphia played
over and over in my head and other
thoughts combined to make this a statement
for me on the ones we knew and lost through
the years to the streets or elsewhere---each with
poignant memories and the hope that
all was as it had to be....

Texture Time

Below see watercolor painting spread of
textures I usually do with acrylics..
I could only do them as I wanted, if
I matte sprayed between layers of
applied texture...

Another texture work I love---a photo of
an old beaten boat in a boat school yard in
Eastport Maine....I am shooting upwards..
let me know if you look at
this upload to Winnas World as I don't
think anyone looks at it
and have been wicked lax in posting.

Lobster Cove Headlight

This is in the north western part of New Foundland where it is very rocky and the coastline much indented...from a CC photo by Lukester 878.....I wanted to try some sort of study with pastel
pencils I hardly ever touch as I am pretty clueless about them and pastel dust bothers me. One thing leads to another and the lighthouse  beckoned to be my subject to fool around with them.  I played way too much I think, as I felt freshness starting to escape...so that meant stop and here it is
done on toned paper....it was a learning time ....and that's always a good thing...I'd love to hear from you in the comments, if you've the time....the size of the image is 4" by 5"....

Quentin of Roseville

being a member of Julia Kay Portrait group I do
a portrait every once in a while
and like to try different tools .....this is
using metallic gold and white pencils...
on black paper
Since it has a mysterious feel
 I liked it...although
it may not be the greatest likeness..
it is .......my "take"
If you're a first time visitor to this site
please enjoy looking around and leave a
comment ....

Color Play Page

all work on the right side of this
blog are paintings I have done

Please notice to the right of this post is a place to click
to take you to my flickr site....
*******
this spread does not scan nor photo good...
if I get the scene side right then the color
tests are too dark....if I get
the color tests right the scene page is too light....
But...here it is and you get the idea...
you see colors used in the Australia house etc but then
I added and added and then inked the shapes etc.
Kept me busy for awhile...

here is the Australian street view
not looking washed out
a shot of some of the many flags that whip around
when you go to the Big E when it's darn cold.

Backdoor Shadowplay

Don't forget to left click to see much larger

first there was pencil
then there was ink

then watercolors
This open door with shadows cast from an overhead
awning caught my eye at the old Mordasky
Homestead...the family I married into
eons ago....this back porch always had so many
plants to care for each day and no awning
back then...
Doors are a photo category I
will add to until my cold still
fingers can no longer
click the camera..
*****
if you scroll way down you see the words "older posts"
and that will take you back for a long ways etc.

to comment just click where it says "no comments"
then type your comment...
sign it and then click 'anonymous'
for the easiest way
(make sure you sign it or I'll never know
who it is from)

Hollow Barn Door

In order to have this look 'right' to me
I had to brighten the red parts and
add the light inside... I did happen to see one
through an open door when
I went by a while back.....it shocked me to see it
as it is always dark looking...all the
colors are dull and middle value in most photos
one might take, which made
me think...I must  make changes so
 I'll like it--as I've driven by this
place for over 50 years and loved it
 that long, too.

Pumpkin at Three O'Clock

I am posting two photos of the finished
watercolor as the scan one on top, comes out
very blue and the photo below is the more natural color...
this lets me see how adding some blue
might look..it's the complimentary  color
of the pumpkin and to me it adds
more punch to what I am after here..
how the light at 3 in the afternoon hit
the pumpkin yesterday
 and how the pumpkin color
showed through the seat holes...
...rang a bell
in my mind and I HAD to capture
what a bang it was to me.
So, I think the top scanned one
says more of how I 'felt' about
what I saw...
